World-famous for its impressive double-helix staircase, the inescapable castle of François 1st, this architectural dream inspired by Leonardo da Vinci, offers visits, free or guided, with Histopads, playful, unusual visits, shows of horses and birds of prey, walks in the largest walled park in Europe.

Between the castle dreamed up by François I, the French gardens ordered by Louis XIV recently restored, the immense walled park as big as the city of Paris, the reconstituted Molière theatre… your day at Chambord will allow you to discover the genius of its designer.

You can get there from the Lodges by renting bicycles, using the large forest paths and a cycle path. And of course, in the fall, you can come or come back to listen to and admire the deer’s bull in this historic forest.

Holidays in Blois

Located 12 km from the Lodges of Blois-Chambord, the old centre of Blois-Chambord offers visits adapted to young and old alike. The old centre of Blois-Chambord is located at 12 km from the Lodges of Blois-Chambord.

You can wander through its narrow streets lined with medieval and Renaissance mansions, stroll in the footsteps of the great lords of the Renaissance who have made up the city’s very rich history, or take an unusual tour in a horse-drawn carriage before climbing the spectacular staircase whose risers can in turn draw the Mona Lisa or…the Daltons, a tribute to Leonardo da Vinci or the comic book festival.

The ” degrees “ which connect the lower town along the Loire River to the high points, around the cathedral and the royal castle will allow you to access the main monuments :

  • Royal castle of Blois, created by Louis XII (possibility to rent a Histopad), famous for its Renaissance openwork staircase. Its 4 wings… and since spring 2019, the new gardens of the Terrasse du Foix, a panoramic balcony overlooking the old town and the Loire River.
  • Maison de la Magie located on the castle square, particularly suitable for families: a fantastic universe that combines the art of magic and science, for the pleasure of children and adults alike!
  • Gardens and Rose Garden of the former Bishopric, on terraces overlooking the Loire, for plant lovers.
  • Tour Beauvoir Tower, former prison.
  • Doubt Foundation : a place to be discovered for non-conformists, welcoming atypical artists, a place founded by Ben whose questions you will find on the city walls during your walks.

Discover the Château de Cheverny

An elegant castle, richly furnished and decorated, with a variety of events all year round: garden festival, tulip festival, jazz, Venetian weekend, heritage days, illuminations… The permanent exhibition “Tintin and Moulinsart” reminds us that Hergé’s castle was the inspiration for Captain Haddock’s castle.

Not to be missed: the French hounds’ soup which delights children every day at 11.30 am.

Another castle to visit by bike from the Lodges, with the prospect of a homemade hot chocolate at the café in the castle’s orangery.

The castles of Villesavin and Beauregard at 4km from the campsite.

Villesavin is the closest castle to the Lodges, so within walking or cycling distance. Built by the financial manager of Chambord, it is a charming Renaissance castle that has evolved over the centuries to adapt to daily life and offers many activities throughout the season, on weekends.

Beauregard was very early recognized as an exceptional place for its famous Portrait Gallery with 327 portraits of illustrious people, an exceptional paving of Delft earthenware tiles, an authentic 16th century kitchen and a collection of exceptional furniture in the middle of a remarkable 40 hectare park.

Discover the estate of Chaumont-sur-Loire

Owned by the d’Amboise family for 500 years, Charles II d’Amboise transformed the original fortress into a Renaissance-style chateau. Since 2007 it has belonged to the Centre-Val de Loire Region.

Currently the estate overlooking the Loire River offers a complete tourist product with, in addition to the visit of the castle, artistic exhibitions in the former stables and a famous and unique Garden Festival which each year allows you to discover about twenty gardens created by landscape designers and artists in the middle of a vast park enamelled with art installations.

Troglodytes in the Cher valley

If you are looking to vary your visits, to change castles, go and discover Bourré in the Cher valley, an underground village carved in the tuffeau, this beautiful blonde stone of the Loire Valley.

Visit the mushroom cellars 50m underground, the silkworm nursery and discover the history of silk. Taste the wines and local products at the Troglo’degusto before returning to the Lodges.
